One question we have heard a few times lately has been “How long will it take to get my tax refund in 2013?”

As a basic overview, we can provide you with the following information (although sometimes these things can be subject to change)

The tax year will finish on 31 March 2013 for the year that started on 1 April 2012.

Any time after 1 April 2013, you can apply with MyTax.co.nz quickly and easily on our website. The IRD will begin to process and release tax refunds around June 2013, at which time MyTax will begin paying out refunds to applicants.

There are many reasons the IRD cannot release tax refunds earlier – a major one being that it takes some time for the IRD to update client details up and down New Zealand once these are received from employers, however as soon as the IRD starts releasing personal tax refunds, MyTax.co.nz will start paying them out to our customers. MyTax.co.nz aims to provide tax refund estimates during May and June when information becomes available prior to the actual refund being released.
